What Happened to Bud?

At the end of chapter 14 Bud does something that is out of character for himself.  What does he do?

Why does this happen to Bud?  What can you infer?  I am looking for specific evidence from the chapter to support your inference.  Cite something directly from the text and explain your citation.

  1. At the end of chapter 14 Bud cries. He never cries.

Bud cries because in the book it says, "I wasn't sure if it was her lips or her hand, but something whispered to me in a language that I didn't have any trouble understanding it, it said, go ahead and cry Bud, you're home"(174). Bud started crying because he felt like he has a place in the world.

  2. At the end of chapter four Bud started crying and puts a napkin on his head.

I can infer that the reason Bud starts crying at the end of the story is that he feels like he has a home. In the story it says, "I was laughing and busting my gut so much that carried away and some rusty value opened ....woop...zoop...sloop"(172). I chose this quote because he felt that they all loved him they were tears of joy. I got this from the book, "Go ahead and cry,Bud,you're home"(174).

Bud starts to cry because he is finally is feeling the love form Miss Thomas. In the book it says, "She pulled me out of the chair into her lap and wrapped her arms around me and bounced me up and down on her knee"

  4. Bud starts crying at the end of the the chapter 14 because he felt like he had finally found the right family.

I can infer that Bud feels this way because most of his life growing up he hasn't found the right family since his mom died. For example Bud said, "All of a sudden I knew that of all places in the world that I'd been in this was one"(172).

  5. What Bud does at the end of chapter fourteen is he starts to cry because he feels at home because now he knows who his father is and his father's friends. He hasn't been happy for a long time and now he feels happy because he has a family.

I can infer that Bud feels this way because he said, "That of all the people I'd ever met these were the ones. This was where I was supposed to be"(172). He started crying because he finally was happy and he had the people he wanted to be with, he laughs now and they make him feel at home.

  6. Something that Bud did that was out of character was that he cried. He had tears of joy.

This happens to Bud because he is finally home. He knows when he is home when Mrs.Thomas says " Go ahead and cry, Bud, you're home" (174). When she says this Bud knows that he is finally home. He cries because he's never had a home before.

  8. At the end of chapter 14 Bud starts to cry and that is out of character for himself.

I can infer Bud started crying because Miss Thomas reminded him of his mom. She was caring, nice, and loving just like Bud's mom. In the story it says, "I felt Miss Thomas's hand come up under the napkin and rub real soft and slow back and forth over my head. She pulled me out of my chair into her lap and wrapped me around and bounced me up and down on her knee" (173). This quote shows that Miss Thomas is doing what Bud's mom would do to him when he would feel sad.

This happens because he saw Herman E. Calloway and he felt like home and he thought he was with family. In the story it said "go head and cry Bud your home"(174). Miss Thomas tried telling Bud that the group was his family and hes home.

  10. Bud gets out of character because he was crying and he doesn't usually cry.

I can infer that Bud started to cry because he made him laugh and Miss Thomas said to him, "I know, I know" (173). She knows how he feels, and he feels sad about everything. I think I picked this quote because it shows that he is sensitive.

Bud cries because he's never had a women as close to him as Miss. Thomas. In the storyb Bud cries and miss thomas comferts him by saying,, "ok baby, ok I know sweetheart I know (173). I think that Bud starts to cry because he was around a nice lady like Mrs. Thomas. In the story, it says, "When she talked she moved her hands and fingers around and the lights from the ceiling and the little candle on the table would bounce off all the diamonds and spark up in your eye and make you feel like you'd been hit with some kind of magic fairy dust then you couldn't help but smile"(170). It also says, "Momma used to tell me I'd only get one chance to make a first impression"(173).
I think this made Bud think of his mom.

  15. In chapter 14 Bud deos something that's out of character. It is when he was out at a restauraunt with Herman E. Calloway and the rest of the group. Then Bud was so happy he started crying.

The reason why I can infer that happens to Bud is he's never been with people that like him or family so he so happy he cried. In the story Bud started crying. In the book it says, "Go ahead and cry Bud, you're home" (174).

  16. The thing that Bud does out of his character is he started to cry.

The reason that Bud does this is because he said, "After I shoved the last crumb of pie in my mouth and scraped up the last dribbles of wipe cream I looked around at the people at the table and I could'nt help breaking out in a big smile" (170). The reason that this quote helps to show why Bud cried is because no one ever made him feel like how he felt when he's around the band. another reason that this happened was beacause when he said, "Miss Thomas humming reminded me most of that feeling you get when you walk barefoot on a railroad track, and for a long time before you can see it, you can feel the train coming right through the bottom of your feet" (170). The reason I thought this was why Bud cried was because the way she hummed made him think about the railroad tracks.

  18. At the end of chapter 14 Bud was laughing but out of now where he starte crying.
I think he started crying because he was laughing so hard that he started crying and when he was crying he must have started rememebering things from his past when he was crying. I also think that because it says "I was smiling and laughing and busting my guts so much that I got carried awayand some rusty old valve squeaked open me then..... wop, zoop, sloop.... tears started jumping out of my eyes so hard that I had to cover my face with the big red and white napkin on the table, (172-173)".

  19. At the end of chapter 14 Bud cires so hard. It is not normal for him to cry.
I can infer that because Bud feels like if it is home and that people around him are like family and he likes then so much. Miss Thomas's treated him like a son and she remind him of his mother. In the book it says, "All of the sudden I knew that of all the places in the world that I'd been in this was the one. That of all the people I'd ever met these were the ones. This is were I was supposed to be" (172). It also says, "I wasn't sure if it was her lips or her hand, but some things whispered to me in a language that I didn't have any trouble understanding. It said, Go ahead and cry, Bud, you're home" (174). These two quotes mean people and Miss Thomas are trying to tell Bud this is where you belong and not to leave. They want him to know that they are his family now.
